CAP FRANÇAIS
Centre for the teaching of French as a foreign language (FFL)

The instructor is a native speaker of  French  and received her university qualification in 1994 (DUFA 1994)
She teaches FFL to students of a wide range of nationalities as well as instructing francophone students with insufficient knowledge of aspects of the French language (reading – writing).

The instructor, who is also the director of the centre, meets students individually at Capfrancais by appointment. This meeting allows her to review the goals of the student, to determine his or her existing knowledge of French and to judge the best level at which to introduce them

Methodology
The teaching of FFL is based on communication which requires the active participation of the students (small working groups, role playing).  FFL manuals are used alongside a range of other teaching aids such as audio presentations, videos, documentary films, songs, newspaper articles, games and novels.

The instructor, from time to time, generates her own teaching aids.

Students are not required to purchase course books during their period of instruction.  However it is recommended that students provide their own copies of dictionaries and of novels read and studied during the course.

It is a feature of the courses that visiting contributors should voluntarily share their local knowledge with the students.  The subjects can either be chosen by the student or may be suggested by the instructor (history, environment, urban development, institutions, health, heritage, etc.)  Teaching and cultural visits are regularly organised (theatres, museums, historic sites etc …)

Courses are held at St Antonin and Caylus in the department of Tarn et Garonne 82 in the Midi-Pyrenees region between September and June, following the French school calendar.  Normally courses consist of two sessions per week arranged between Monday and Friday providing a total of 4 hours per week for each group.  Each group is limited to not more than ten students.

During each course the instructor teaches grammar, vocabulary, verb conjugation, comprehension and cultural aspects tailored, of course, to the level of each group.

Between lessons, the students are given assignments to carry out at home.  These consist of exercises designed to strengthen both written and spoken linguistic competence.

At the end of each course in June and before the new term in September, additional courses of two hours per week are given to meet specific student requirements.  These serve to ensure continued use of the language.  The holiday courses are primarily oriented towards the spoken language.

More intensive courses can be arranged : these include  6 – 8 hours of instruction per week over a period of 5 months, provided sufficient students express an interest (a minimum group size of 6 is required).  These courses are held in the evening (18:00 to 20:00)

Vacation courses can be arranged if enough students wish to attend (8 people)

They are available at all levels and are held during July and August.  To meet students requirements they can be arranged to last one to three weeks, Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 12:00.

These courses are normally tailored to improve oral expression and are based on specific situations in daily life and covering current events.

Individual courses can be arranged at any time during the year.

The level achieved after each course will depend on initial familiarity with the language, the length of the course, the degree of motivation and the capability and input of the student during the course.

Registration and Fees
Course fees should be paid at the time of registration (following the assessment meeting) or at the latest by the beginning of the course. A course contract will be given to all students on registration even they are financing the course themselves.  This contract serves to establish that the organiser will provide the course according the agreed conditions and that the students commit to attending the course.

Provisional Fees __/ 2008 2009
4 hrs per week:   600  euros
6-8 hrs per week: 800 euros
Additional courses: from 190 to 570 euros
Individual courses: 28 euros per hour

Fees for the coming term have not yet been fixed since they will depend on the number of participants at the beginning of the course.

CAPFRANCAIS aims at a professional method of teaching the language which promotes a friendly atmosphere during the classes, which reveals the richness of the different nationalities who will come together at the centre and, having a common objective, will discover and learn to speak French, a language which is certainly difficult and complicated but also poetic and beautiful.
